Local Students Bring Color and Community to Newport and Barton

Murals in Newport and Barton

Newport & Barton, VT – RuralEdge is proud to announce the completion of a vibrant mural project at two of its properties — Pierce Block in Barton and Lakebridge in Newport. This initiative, led by the Community Building and Engagement team at RuralEdge, celebrates local artistry, youth engagement, and the spirit of Vermont communities.

The project, which has been in development over the past six months, was made possible through a generous grant from the Vermont Community Foundation. This funding enabled RuralEdge to partner with North Country Union High School in Newport and Lake Region Union High School in Orleans, connecting student artists with the opportunity to create permanent public art installations for their communities.

At Lakebridge, Catriona Kinsey, a junior at North Country Union High School, designed and painted a 4'x6' mural themed around Vermont’s four seasons and the local activities that define them. The artwork, full of vibrant colors and rich imagery, now brightens the community room and reflects the shared experiences of life in Vermont. Catriona, who plans to pursue a Studio Arts degree at Concordia University in Montreal, received a scholarship as part of the project to support her future in the arts.

At Pierce Block, Ellectra Rolfe, a junior from Lake Region Union High School, created a striking trio of 4'x6' panels with a baseball theme — a tribute to the Barton baseball field behind the property. The bold, dynamic colors of Ellectra’s work contrast beautifully with the yellow exterior of the building, creating a visual landmark that energizes the space. Ellectra also received a scholarship to support her artistic ambitions studying animation at Champlain College.

“We are so proud of the talent and creativity shown by these young artists,” said Colleen DeMarie, Resident Support Specialist at RuralEdge. “Their work not only enhances our properties visually but also creates a deeper connection between our residents, our organization, and the communities we serve.”

RuralEdge extends its heartfelt thanks to all who contributed to this successful collaboration, including staff members Chad McCormick, Larry Chase, Alex Perron, and Stahr Brown for their help with preparation and installation, and the dedicated teachers Natalie Gaines and Stephanie Harper for mentoring their students throughout the process.

These murals are a testament to the power of community partnerships and the positive impact of investing in young people and the arts.
